The first meeting of the new Okehampton Labour Group was attended by 31 local members, which reflects the meteoric rise in the overall membership of Central Devon Constituency Labour Party.
There was lively discussion of Labour Party policies and an extremely enthusiastic sharing of ideas about how the group might progress.
It was unanimously agreed that the group should not only provide a forum for debate amongst members but should also reach out into the community so that we can better understand and involve ourselves in local issues and concerns.
To that end we will also hold public meetings as and when appropriate.
It was felt that the imminent County Council elections would be an ideal early focus for the group as we already have a candidate for the Hatherleigh and Chagford seat and a willing potential candidate came forward at the meeting for the Okehampton Rural seat.
Members were invited to send in ideas for future meetings, the agendas for which will be compiled for the time being by a steering group of six volunteers.
It is hoped that the group will very soon become an established branch of the CLP.
The next meeting will be held at the Ockment Centre on Tuesday 21st March at 7.30pm, the agenda for which will be published after the first meeting of the steering group.
